October 19, 2023 8:30am-3:00pm Choosing Assessments for Identifying Language & Literacy Disorders & What To Do Next MSSLHA Sponsored Register here .5 ASHA CEUs available Selecting, administering, and interpreting standardized language/literacy tests in the “real world” of school practice brings responsibility for contributing to life-significant decisions about eligibility, IEP goals, and language and literacy services. This workshop provides a refresher course on evaluating and selecting tests and procedures for students whose language difficulties lead them to struggle with the academic and social demands of schooling. First, participants will learn about updated principles of evidence-based practice in assessment, including what to look for in modern tests’ descriptions of reliability, validity, reduction of bias, and sensitivity and specificity. Standardized tests can be validated for identifying profiles associated with developmental language disorders (DLD) and dyslexia. Examples will be drawn from multiple tests, but particularly the Test of Integrated Language and Literacy Skills (TILLS) and the Student Language Scale (SLS), of which the presenter discloses her authorship. Informal curriculum-based procedures also are essential for developing individualized goals and objectives. For this part of the workshop, case studies will be used teach participants the four questions for curriculum-based language assessment and intervention, along with methods aimed at developing more advanced language and literacy skills for children with different profiles, with the ultimate goal of improving lives.

This presentation will review the development of SUGAR, including how SUGAR methods differ from other methods, how to obtain a robust language sample, how to transcribe and analyze language samples, and how to use the data to make diagnostic decisions.
